Neighbourhoods Connected ‘Dinner on The Strand’

To celebrate Harmony Week and Neighbour Day our Celebrate Culture team worked in partnership with Creating Communities to host a dinner on The Strand to connect the Wellard and surrounding community on 22 March.

With the aim of promoting community and harmony spirit, everyone was invited to this free event with a dish to share.

Lyn Coomer opened the event with an Acknowledgement to Country. This was followed by a welcome speech from one of our Celebrate Culture members Huda. All attendees then held hands in a circle for a minute’s silence to honour the victims of the recent Christchurch tragedy.

There was a great turnout of community members who enjoyed feasting on a smorgasbord of cultural delights whilst meeting their neighbours and engaging in discussions about their neighbourhoods.

After dinner, we were treated to a performance by the amazing Ngaru Pou Inc children’s singing group. This group’s vision is to provide a true Maori cultural experience through language, protocol, traditions and values of being united as one.
